Bronx Educational Opportunity Center

The Bronx Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) offers a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, along with various other educational opportunities. This CNA program equips students with essential nursing skills required for patient care in different healthcare settings. It covers areas such as patient care, communication, monitoring, and teamwork. Successful program completion prepares students for the New York State CNA certification exam.

The program typically spans 7 to 8 weeks, running from Monday to Friday, with classes held from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. To enroll, students must meet certain TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) score requirements, specifically, a Reading score of 10.0 and a Math score of 7.0.

Before applying to any program at SUNY Bronx EOC, prospective students must satisfy three preliminary requirements established by the University Center for Academic and Workforce Development of the State University of New York (UCAWD/SUNY). These requirements include New York State residency of at least one year, meeting income eligibility criteria, and obtaining the required TABE scores for their chosen program.

The admissions process involves testing in Reading comprehension, Math skills, and Language skills using the TABE. The results of these tests determine eligibility for the desired program. While a high school diploma or equivalent is necessary for college preparation and vocational programs, the EOC offers preparatory programs for applicants not meeting the chosen program’s requirements.

Applicants who meet the preliminary requirements can complete an online application, after which they must visit the EOC with the required documents and take the TABE placement test.

It’s important to note that all services at the SUNY Bronx EOC are provided free of charge. To register for courses, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria of New York State residency and income requirements, as well as the specific TABE score requirements for their chosen program.

Additionally, applicants with 33 or more college credits are ineligible for registration. Acceptance into a program also involves an interview with a counselor, approval from the Director of Academic Affairs, and the Executive Director.

Prospective students are required to provide certain documents during registration, including proof of income, education, government-issued identification, social security card, and proof of legal status in the United States. They must also establish proof of New York State residency.

The SUNY Bronx EOC takes an active role in helping students achieve their educational and career goals while providing a structured learning environment and support services.
